Day 1 – Arrival and Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
After an early morning breakfast, you will be picked by our tour guide and after transferred to Nyungwe Forest National Park in the southern province of Rwanda. Nyungwe is apparently the most isolated national park among the rest(about 130 kilometers away from Kigali) and requires about 6 hours of driving hence, calls for a very early departure. Along the journey lies several tourist sites like the National Museum of Rwanda in Butare which we shall all visit for hints of history and facts. This museum carries a lot of history about tiny Rwanda hence turns out to be a good source for information related to Rwandese culture along with history as well. Upon completing our brief exploration at the Rwanda Museum, we shall have lunch and proceed with our journey to Nyungwe, arriving late in the afternoon where we shall just relax, have dinner and an overnight as we prepare for a Chimpanzee trekking experience the following day.
Day 2 – Chimpanzee Tracking and Canopy Walk
Day 2 calls for a very early morning rise! We should be up by 5:00 am for an early breakfast so that we have enough time to transfer to our meeting point to meet the park rangers and after on set off into the forest to find the Chimpanzees before they wake up. If we are able to locate these primates before they wake up, we shall definitely have more time with them because when they start moving, locating them might be a challenge basing on the rough terrain of the forest and the speed at which they move. Upon locating the Chimps, we shall have a full hour of an encounter with them and return to our safari lodge after for a lunch break.
In the afternoon, you shall embark on another exciting adventure in this forest. You will enjoy a Canopy Walk at the top of Nyungwe Forest getting a much concentrated view of the entire forest along with its flora and fauna. This walk kicks off at the main reception center of Uwinka and stretches close to 200 meters in length. The Canopy Walk should last for about 2 hours. From here we shall return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3 – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park, Visit Twin Lakes
After an early morning breakfast, we shall leave for Volcanoes National Park, Musanze in the northern province of Rwanda. When we reach Musanze, we shall first visit the magical twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera which are located on the outskirts of Volcanoes National Park. We shall transfer you to the point with the best view so that you have the best sights of the green islands on the lakes plus the surrounding communities. We shall then tranfetr to our place of stay for dinner and an overnight as we prepare for a mountain gorilla trekking experience the following day.
Day 4 – Rwanda Gorilla Trekking and Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village Visit
On this day breakfast will be served as early as 6:00 am in the morning so that we have enough time to arrange and meet up with other people at the briefing point right next to the park headquarters in Kinigi. We ought to pack lunch and a few beverages preferably energy drinks with us since there are no shops in the jungles where we can purchase them. The briefing session should commence at exactly 7:30 am and should last for about 30 minutes which you should make use of by asking whatever questions you might need to ask. It is from this same meeting that we shall be allocated respective Mountain Gorilla groups to trek before making our final journey in the Volcanoes in search for mountain gorillas. The trek should last between 2 – 8 hours depending on the movement on these gentle primates including a full hour of close contact, where we shall get close up to 7 meters. After this awesome adventure, we shall return to our safari lodge for a short relaxation moment as we prepare for a cultural visit to Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village in the afternoon.
At Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, you will have the chance to experience the true culture and traditions of the Rwandans that reside in this cultural village. You will enjoy great cultural dances from the traditional Intore dancers, story telling moments, encounters with the Batwa people plus a lot more activities. We shall then return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 – Golden Monkey Tracking and Transfer to Kigali
After an early morning breakfast, we shall transfer to the park’s headquarters at 7.00 am for a short briefing meeting that should last for not more than 30 minutes and then start off our quest to find a group of habituated Golden Monkeys of Rwanda. These primates are situated in the bamboo vegetation right at the bottom of Mount Sabinyo.
